Viktor Vekselberg was his friend at university. He formed the Renova investment vehicle. After that, the two joined Mikhail Fridman’s Alfa Group to create the AAR venture.

Access has since diversified its portfolio to include investments in oil, entertainment and coal as well as petrochemicals and plastics.

Access Industries acquired the plastics and petrochemicals manufacturer Basell Polyolefins of Royal Dutch Shell, BASF and other companies for $5.7billion in August 2005. Basell purchased Lyondell Chemical Company on December 20th, 2007 at a cost of $19 billion.

Access Industries was one of the few bidders to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s tender in 2010. Blavatnik sued JPMorgan Chase the following year. Blavatnik lost $100 million having followed Morgan’s advice three decades earlier to buy mortgage securities that had AAA credit ratings.
