He started acting at an early age. Leonardo DiCaprio was raised in California, where he attended John Marshall High School as well as the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies. After his third year, he dropped out of highschool and received his GED. He originally wanted to be a marine biologist as a child. However, his brother earned $50,000 for him to star in a commercial.

His first commercials included Matchbox cars and Kraft Foods, Bubble Yum, Apple Jacks, and Kraft Foods. He was a star on Fun House, Santa Barbara, The Outsiders and Parenthood. He was first cast as Luke Brower in Growing Pains. He was nominated to the Young Artist Award for Best Young Actor in a Television Series for this series. From that series, DiCaprio became more well-known.
