He continued to expand his control over the telephone communication companies in the hope of soon purchasing the Mexican phone company Telmex from the government. He quickly developed a US version for ‘Telmex’ after acquiring the company. He also purchased a stake at the US mobile company, Tracfone.
After undergoing heart surgery, he decided to pass some of his work on to his family and to stop working in the business.
Carlos invested in many of the largest companies around the globe in 2000, including “The New York Times Company”, “Volaris,” “Saks Fifth Avenue” and Telekom Austria.
Carlos Slim Helu was the largest individual shareholder of ‘The New York Times Company’ by January 2015.
