Darryl Matthews McDaniels was born in Harlem on the 31st of May 1964. In 1982, he graduated from Rice High School in Manhattan. He enrolled at St. John’s University, Queens, New York. However, he did not graduate.

McDaniels, along with his group mates Joseph Simmons and Jason Master Jay Mizell, formed Run DMC in 1982.

McDaniels founded Run DMC in 1982 with his group mates Joseph ” Rev Run” Simmons, and Jason “JamMaster Jay” Mizell. Run DMC was founded in 1984 by Russell Simmons. They released their first album, Run DMC.

Run DMC’s King of Rock album was released in the following year. American Bandstand was their second appearance, with Run DMC performing “Jam Master Jammin”.

Run DMC’s 1993 album Down with the King was released. After an eight-year hiatus, Run DMC released Crown Royal, their return album in 2001.

McDaniels founded The Felix Organization, which is a non-profit that helps foster children. He and Run DMC were both inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.

McDaniels founded the comic book publishing imprint, Darryl Makes Comics, in 2014. Run DMC was the first group of rap to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
