Eric Emerson Schmidt was a Washington, D.C., native.

Schmidt is the son of Eleanor Emerson Schmidt and Wilson Emerson Schmidt.

Bell Labs was one of his first jobs. He worked with Mike Lesk at the Bell Labs to rewrite Lex. This program generates lexical analyzers to run on Unix computers.
