Hayward made a statement in May 2010 that he would not be able to complete his two remaining seasons of college eligibility and instead enter the NBA draft. Mark Bartelstein was his agent. The Utah Jazz selected Hayward on June 24, as the ninth overall pick for the NBA draft.

In 2017, he made it clear via The Players Tribune that he was going to sign with the Boston Celtics. He signed with the Celtics for a reported $428 million contract on July 14th.

He scored 39 points in a 119-112 win over the Cavaliers to match his regular season career high. Hayward fractured his hand against the San Antonio Spurs on November 9.

The Boston Celtics signed him to a 4-year $120m deal the next year. He was then traded with 2023- and 2024-round draft picks to the Charlotte Hornets.
