Jane Margaret Lakes Harman, a New York City native, was born on 28 June 1945.

Harman is the child of Lucille N. Lakes and Adolf N. Lakes. Her mother was born in America. Her maternal grandparents immigrated to America from Russia.

Harman’s family moved from Harman, Texas to Los Angeles, California. She attended Los Angeles public schools when she was four years old. She graduated from University High School in 1962. She received a bachelor’s in government from Smith College in 1966.

She earned her Juris Doctor in 1969 after continuing her Harvard Law School studies.

Career

She spent 10 years working for different firms as a lawyer after graduating. She joined the Jimmy Carter White House in 1976 as special counsel for the Department of Defense, and as Deputy Secretary of Cabinet.

In 1978 Harman shocked the political world by announcing her intention to leave politics to raise her children. Jane and her husband first announced their divorce in the same year.

Sidney Harman, an engineering tycoon, married Harman two years later. Sidney was the co-founder and CEO of Harmon Kardon, which manufactures car and home audio equipment.

Harman is currently the manager of audio brands JBL Acoustics, AKG Acoustics, and Infinity. Harman died at the age of 92 in 2011. Samsung Electronics purchased Harmon Kardon for $8 billion in 2017.

Harman worked in corporate law for much of the 1980s. In the 1990s, Harman entered politics and was elected to the House of Representatives to represent California’s 36th congressional District.

She was in office from 1993-1999, and again from 2001-2011.
