Early Life

Rich Paul was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on 16 December 1981.

Paul grew up in a tiny apartment above his Cleveland father’s shop. His father supported him in enrolling at a Roman Catholic high school. His father was diagnosed with cancer and died in 1999.

Andy Hyman mentored him to sell vintage Jerseys after he had finished high school.

He would sell them from his truck in Cleveland. He met LeBron James in 2002 and Paul surprised him with a Warren Moon jersey. They exchanged contact information.

Paul was a part of LeBron James’ inner circle, which included his childhood friends.

Later, he would start working under Leon Rose.

Paul and LeBron left Rose in 2012 to start their own agency, Klutch Sports Group.

Paul engaged Mark Termini as his representative to manage the NBA contract negotiations at Klutch. From 2014 to 2019, he negotiated $1.4 billion worth of NBA contracts for Klutch Sports clients.

UTA later asked Paul to lead its sports division. Paul was offered a place on the UTA board of directors in 2020.

NCAA amended its regulations regarding sports agents. They now require them to have a bachelor’s degree. Later, he argued in The Atheltic, that the rule would prohibit people with different backgrounds, people of color, and people without the financial means to attend college, from being agents.

Paul founded Klutch Conversations in 2020. The initiative was launched at the NBA All-Star Weekend in 2020 with SocialWorks & General Mills in an effort to promote financial literacy among young people. He was also included in the “Ebony 100” List that year.

Nerlens Noel sued him on the grounds of breach of contract, fiduciary duty, and negligence. This was after he turned down a contract worth $70 million from the Dallas Mavericks.
