Early Life

Carl Bernstein was a Washington D.C. native, who was born on February 14, 1944.

Bernstein was born to Jewish parents. Both of his parents were activists for civil rights and members of the Communist Party. He attended Montgomery Blair School in Maryland.

Career

Bernstein joined Washington Post in 1966. After a few more years, he would get the Post more attention. Bernstein was assigned to work with Bob Woodward in 1972 for a Watergate break-in.

Five burglars were captured in the area where the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters was located. One of them was an ex-CIA agent who provided security services for the Republicans.

Bernstein, Woodward, and others eventually linked the burglars to a huge fund and a corrupt attorney General. He was the one who first suspected that Nixon was involved.

1. Popular Culture

Real journalism is now dominated by popular culture at its lowest level – misinformation, lack of information, disinformation, and contempt for the truth or reality of most people’s daily lives.

2. Ethical Issues

Because reporters have immense power to cause harm, the human ethical issues that are most crucial and difficult are the human ones.

3. The Media

The truth is that the media today are the most powerful institution in our society. They frequently ignore their obligations and waste power.

Favorite Quotes From Carl Bernstein

The culture is not a sub-culture that has popped up beneath the surface of every society, and can offer harmless entertainment. The weird, the stupid, the coarse are now our cultural norm.

Institutions can make mistakes, even major ones, especially when it comes to individual employees. These include the Washington Post, New York Times and three original TV networks.
