Early Life

Christopher Kamara was born in Middlesbrough (North Riding of Yorkshire) on 25 December 1957.

His father made him eligible to play for Sierra Leone. He was also called up to the 1994 African Cup of Nations.

His father was a gambler and left his mother Irene with the responsibility of begging for money from neighbors to feed Chris, George, and Maria.

Kamara’s football career began when he was spotted by Ian St John, a Portsmouth manager. He signed Kamara on apprentice wages in November 1974 and paid a PS200 buyout fee to the Navy.

In August 1975, he made his debut with the team in a 2-0 loss to Luton Town. He won his chance after Mick Mellows suffered a knee injury. Bobby McGuinness set him up and he scored his first senior goal against Bolton Wanderers in the next match.

Chris continued to play regular football at Fratton Park during the 1975-76 season, when “Pompey”, who was then relegated from the Second Division, was in last place.

Frank Burrows, who previously coached Kamara at Swindon, resigned him to Portsmouth. After Fred Callaghan, Brentford manager agreed to a deal that would have him swap with David Crown in October 1981, he was transferred again.

After joining Dave Bassett’s Sheffield United loan team in 1992, Kamara made a return to the Premier League. He made the switch from Kenilworth Road, Bramall Lane to permanent, despite not being able to secure a regular place in the first-team during the 1992-93 season.

Expectations are a fool’s guide for life.

3. Accept Change

You can grow and change. You will regret the past and fear the future if you don’t.
