He met a priest that he had met while on the ship and got him a place to stay and his job at New York City’s Biltmore Hotel. McCourt made about $26 per week and sent $10 to his mother in Limerick.

McCourt used his education benefits to get into New York University. New York University awarded him a bachelor’s in English in 1957. McCourt was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography each year in 1997.

He was a member of The National Arts Club and was the recipient of The International Center’s Award of Excellence.

He was awarded the American Academy of Achievement’s Golden Plate Award in 1999. McCourt received an honorary degree in 2002 from the University of Western Ontario.
