Lawrence Joseph Mullen Jr. was conceived in Dublin on the 31st of October 1961.
He lived in Artane, Dublin until his twenties. His father was a civil servant and his mother was a homemaker. He had an older sister and a younger sibling, both of whom died in 1973.
Mullen was eight years old when he went to Chatham Row School of Music to learn piano. He then started drumming in 1971, at the age of nine, under the guidance of Joe Bonnie, an Irish drummer. He was a member of the Artane Boys Band, a Dublin marching band.
Career
A few years later, Mullen Jr.’s career took off when the band U2, originally called the Larry Mullen Band, was formed. It consisted of Mullen and his brothers Paul “Bono”, Hewson and David “The Edge” Evans. Adam Clayton and Mullen’s friends Ivan McCormick, and Peter Martin.
The name and lineup of the band were changed, eventually leading to the formation of U2 as a 4-piece (Bono, The Edge, Clayton, Mullen Jr.).
He has shared in more than 60 awards, including 22 Grammys. Mullen Jr. has worked on many side projects in addition to his work with the band.
