Jonathan Smith was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on 17 January 1971.

Smith was raised in a suburban neighborhood of Southwest Atlanta. Smith is the oldest of five children, born to his father, an engineer from Lockheed Martin, as well as his mother, who was in the Army Reserves.

Smith was a Frederick Douglass High School student and was a member of the school’s marching bands.


Smith started his career as a musician by taking the stage name Lil Jon. With rappers, Big Sam, Lil Bo, and Smith formed the musical group Lil Jon &The East Side Boyz.

Lil Jon and The East Side Boyz included singles “Who U Wit?” and “Shawty Freak A Lil’ Sumthin” in their album. The latter song was released in 1998. Their fans loved both singles.
