Sparks’ first novel was published in 1985. He began working as a waiter in the real estate industry and started selling dental products over the phone. He co-authored ‘Wokini: A Lakota Journey To Happiness and Self-Understanding’ which was published in 1990.

Sparks began the writing of ‘The Notebook. The book was published by Sparks in 1996. It reached the New York Times bestseller list in the first week.
