Shannon Goad “Shay” Sharpe was born in Chicago on June 26, 1968.

He is the younger brother of former NFL wide receiver Sterling Sharpe. He played basketball and football at Savannah State.

He competed in throwing and jumping events. Sharpe’s personal bests were 6.73 meters in the long jump and 14.73 meters in the triple jump. Sharpe also threw 42.06 meters in the discus throw.


Sharpe was the Denver Broncos’ 7th-round pick with the 192nd. He started as a receiver and only managed 29 passes in his two seasons.

Later, the team switched him to a close end. His performance was greatly improved by this switch. He was a tight end and caught 53 passes during his third season. He also won Super Bowl XXXII’s championship rings.

He won another Super Bowl XXXV championship against the New York Giants in his first year as a Ravens player. He returned to the Broncos and played with them until 2003. Sharpe retired from football to become an NFL analyst for CBS.
